Botswana has become a nation of orphans with
nearly 10% of the population being orphaned
children. The harsh living conditions deriving
from poverty, scarce clean resources,
alcoholism, along with the  high mortality rate
from malnutrition, infectious diseases such as
tuberculosis, unfortunately affect the children
most. The incredible fast expansion of AIDS/HIV
Virus (nearly 39% of adults in Botswana are HIV
positive) also creates a serious need for children’
s homes. In our neighboring district of Ghanzi
alone there were 700 registered orphans in the
year 2000 and it has been assumed that there are
the same number of unregistered orphans.
Bearing witness to the orphans and the poverty
of this area it became clear that something
needed to be done, and that a children's home
could help improve the situation.
Reasons for Starting the Home
The Kalahari Children's Home Foundation
Our Objective: We strive to raise these children in a safe and calm environment
where they will be nurtured, loved and cared for. We also provide them with
education and health care. Our goal is to create a safe haven, a big family, where these
children will be educated and learn values ranging from fraternity, solidarity, and
eventually independence. We are working together to foster happy, healthy, educated
and successful individuals.
